Alaska is a haven for wildlife and a glorious experience for nature lovers. In wildlife-abundant Alaska, a unique area of the Chilkat River that the Tlingit Indians called “The Council Grounds of the Eagles” offers exceptional bald eagle-viewing opportunities.

A natural hydrology phenomenon keeps several miles of the Chilkat River open to spawning salmon in the late fall and winter. The ice-free water brings access to fish when food supplies are exhausted or inaccessible elsewhere. It is nature’s gift to these congregating eagles, who gather along this river for a grand feast.

Eagles flock from as far away as Washington State for the unique access to salmon. Hundreds of eagles, a count that can swell to over 3000, can be seen foraging along the gravel bars and perched in the cottonwood trees.
